A roof built for harsh weather – and proven for over 40 years

When The Nordic House was constructed in the early 1980s, the project required a roofing solution capable of withstanding the extreme and shifting Faroese climate. Fagtun – today known as Kima – installed the roof using Protan 1.2 mm PVC membrane.

The roof structure consisted of steel beams with siporex elements, covered with polystyrene insulation, glass fleece and Protan PVC in 2-metre sheets. The installation took place during a long period of heavy rain in 1982, demanding both precision and persistence. Several areas needed re-welding to ensure full waterproofing, but the result was a solid and tight roof by the end of the season.

The final turf layers were added the following summer, and the building was officially opened on 8 May 1983.

A recognised architectural landmark

Today, The Nordic House is considered an architectural icon. The building – and its roof – has stood strong for more than 40 years, frequently highlighted by architects and researchers for its design quality and longevity.
