In Kabelvåg in Lofoten, an archipelago off the coast of Northern Norway, a new experience and knowledge centre has taken shape. SKREI will tell the story of the migrating Atlantic cod – and of the fisheries that have shaped coastal communities and Norwegian history for more than a thousand years.
SKREI brings together four attractions: the Lofoten Museum, the Lofoten Aquarium, Gallery Espolin and the new main building, Otolitten. Together, they will give visitors an insight into the relationship between the fish, the sea, the people and the unique history of Lofoten.
Otolitten forms the new centrepiece of SKREI. The 5,000 m² building was designed by LPO Arkitekter, with Sortland Entreprenør as the main contractor. It houses the main exhibition as well as temporary exhibitions, event spaces, a restaurant and café, and a museum shop.
The architecture is designed to connect the new building with the existing museum environment and the surrounding coastal landscape. The roof plays an important part in this expression.
Protan Entreprenør Bodø supplied and installed the roofing solution for Otolitten. Protan SE 1.8 roofing membrane was used for the waterproofing, combined with sedum supplied by Bergknapp AS.
The green roof helps integrate the new museum building into the surrounding landscape, creating a natural transition between the architecture and its spectacular setting in Northern Norway. Beneath the vegetation, the Protan membrane provides a robust and reliable roofing solution designed for long service life and demanding Nordic conditions.
The result is a roof where functionality and architecture work together – on a building created to tell one of the defining stories of Norway’s coastal heritage.
