The choice of roof covering depends on what type of solar panels will be used. The right roof covering type and quality is selected on the basis of whether the panels are photovoltaic (PV) or thermal. These can either be integrated or freestanding.
PV panels are most efficient when it’s cold. Light-coloured surfaces normally reflect sunlight better than those with dark colours.
Protan’s white roof covering, Protan Cool Roof, and the light grey Protan SE are thus primarily used when there are plans to place solar panels for energy production on the roof. Protan Cool Roof has some of the best sun reflectance values on the market for this type of product and makes an optimal contribution to a Protan solar roof system with PV panels.
Thermal solar panels convert solar energy into heat, which is used to heat water. The hotter it is, the more efficiently this type of solar panel works. It is therefore an advantage to use dark surfaces that absorb as much of the heat from the sun as possible. For this reason, we recommend our black or dark grey Protan SE membrane.
